Designing with heart and heritage: a retrospective view.

I’m a self-taught graphic designer, working for over three decades. My creative journey started with the timeless legacy of Milton Glaser’s iconic “I ❤ NY” logo - sketched on the back of a taxi-ride envelope. A n extraordinary lesson in how simplicity paired with emotion can become a universal cultural symbol. His work reminds me that great design doesn’t just communicate; it resonates.

In 1977, discovering the work of Jamie Reid and the clarity-inflected aesthetics of Peter Savilleit  inspired me to explore the mischievous and minimalist sides of visual language. Reid’s punk-era provocations and Saville’s sleek elegance taught me that design can be both rebellious and refined . Meanwhile, Vaughan Oliver’s immersive album covers and Malcolm Garrett’s bold typographic identities showed me the possibilities when graphic design intersects with music and popular culture .

I’ve had the honour of collaborating with agencies on global projects - branding Shell Global Solutions on an international scale and creating material for  record labels such as EMI, Sony Classical, and Island Records. I’ve enjoyed working with students at the Liverpool Institute of Performing Arts, helping them develop visual dentities.

As I approach retirement, I’m eager to bring this wealth of experience to support local businesses and design agencies seeking fresh inspiration. My design philosophy blends decades of global practice with a sincere belief in culturally aware, emotionally rooted visual storytelling.

Through my continued practice, I hope to contribute not only as a designer, but as a mento, sharing insights shaped by pioneers and driven by a lifelong passion for visual communication.
